A straight cutter produces a uniform cylinder for general use. A tapered plug cutter drill bit creates a plug that is slightly wider at the top than the bottom, allowing it to wedge tightly into the hole and eliminate visible glue lines around the rim.
It is possible, but the lack of a center pilot point can cause the tool to walk when starting. Use a portable drill guide to keep the tool vertical when operating it in a hand drill.
Burning is caused by friction, commonly from excessive drill press speed, dull cutting edges, or sawdust left in the circular groove. Reduce the speed, sharpen the cutter, and lift it regularly to clear sawdust.
For dense woods such as oak, maple, or cherry, use HSS plug cutters. Carbon steel bits can overheat and dull more quickly in tight-grained hardwoods, resulting in scorched plugs.
Do not drill through the board. Drill about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep, remove the board from the drill press, then insert a flathead screwdriver or small chisel into the groove and gently pry until the plug snaps at its base.
